Urinal Screens vs Urinal Blocks: Which One, and What Each Costs Per Urinal Per Month
The short answer: a urinal screen is a mat that lives in the urinal for a fixed number of days; a urinal block is a consumable that dissolves or evaporates with every flush and is gone when it is gone. Neither one cleans anything. The screen’s job is to stop debris reaching the drain, cut splash and release fragrance on a calendar; the block’s job is to release fragrance or surfactant on a flush count. Which one is cheaper per urinal per month depends on your traffic, and which one is allowed depends on what the block is made of, because the classic para block is built on a chemical that California lists as a carcinogen. What each product actually is
Urinal screens are flexible plastic or EVA mats, usually with raised bristles or a domed shape, that sit over the drain. Most are scented; some carry enzyme or bacterial cultures marketed to digest uric scale on the surface they touch. They are removed and replaced whole, and manufacturers print a service life on the case, commonly 30 days for the fragrance. They also do two things a block never does: they catch gum, paper and cigarette ends before they reach the trap, and the bristle pattern reduces splash onto the floor and partition, which is where most restroom odor actually comes from.
Urinal blocks (cakes, pucks) come in two chemistries that behave completely differently:
- Para blocks are made of para-dichlorobenzene (1,4-dichlorobenzene, PDCB), the mothball chemical. They do not dissolve; they sublimate straight from solid to vapor, which is why they seem to last and why a restroom with them smells the way it does from the doorway. OEHHA lists p-dichlorobenzene as a cancer-causing chemical under California’s Proposition 65, listed 1 January 1989, with a no-significant-risk level of 20 micrograms per day; that is why the box carries a Prop 65 warning if it is sold in California. Whether your state, your insurer or your green-cleaning contract permits them is a question for those documents, not for us; we do not stock them.
- Non-para blocks are surfactant and fragrance compounds that dissolve with water. They release with each flush, so their life is measured in flushes, not days. In a busy men’s room they can be gone in a week; in a quiet office they can last a month. The label’s “up to” figure is a flush count dressed as a duration.
What neither product does
Urinal odor is uric scale: mineral deposits that trap urine in the trap, the drain and under the rim. Fragrance from a screen or block covers it; nothing in either product removes it. Cost per urinal per month

The flush-count rows are assumptions, labelled as such, because block makers publish “up to” durations rather than flushes per block; the point is the shape of the result, not the decimal. In a quiet restroom the block is cheaper. Past a few dozen flushes a day the screen wins, and it keeps winning as traffic rises, because its cost is flat while the block’s climbs with every flush. That is the opposite of what most buyers assume when they see the per-box price. A 20-urinal facility choosing blocks at the busy rate is spending roughly $150 a month more than one on screens, and getting worse splash control for it.
Water-saving fixtures change the answer
Low-flow and waterless urinals break the block model entirely. A block needs water to dissolve; a 0.125-gallon flush barely wets it, and a waterless urinal never does, so the block either sits inert or slowly clogs the cartridge. Waterless fixtures need whatever the fixture manufacturer approves and nothing else, because the sealant trap can be damaged by solvents and by descalers. Screens are generally fine in low-flow fixtures and are the only product that also protects the trap from debris, which in a low-flow unit is the failure that costs a plumber visit.
How to decide
- Count flushes, not urinals. A men’s room in an office with 40 staff is a different product decision from one in a bar.
- Rule out para blocks unless your contract and your state explicitly allow them; assume a Prop 65 warning means a question from a tenant sooner or later.
- Below roughly 50 flushes a day per urinal, a non-para block is the cheaper fragrance. Above it, a screen is cheaper and controls splash, so switch.
- Put the descale on the calendar regardless. Fragrance is not maintenance.
- Check the fixture: low-flow or waterless means screens or manufacturer-approved products only.

Are urinal blocks banned?
Not federally. Para-dichlorobenzene blocks carry a Proposition 65 cancer warning in California because OEHHA has listed p-dichlorobenzene since 1989, and many green-cleaning specifications and property contracts exclude them. Non-para blocks are not affected by that listing. Check your contract and state rules.
How long does a urinal screen last?
Most manufacturers print a fragrance service life of about 30 days on the case. The physical mat lasts longer, but once the scent is spent it is only a debris guard, so replace on the label interval and note the date on the screen tab if it has one.
Which is cheaper, screens or blocks?
Blocks in low-traffic restrooms, screens everywhere else. A screen costs the same per month regardless of use; a non-para block dissolves faster with every flush, so its monthly cost rises with traffic.
Do urinal screens stop the smell?
