Are shop rags lint-free?Not all of them. Huck towels, a tight flat cotton weave first made for surgical use, are the low-lint choice for glass, stainless and paint prep. White t-shirt rags (knit cotton jersey) shed very little lint. Terry towels shed lint and hold grit, so keep them for spills and engine work. Can you wash shop rags?Yes. Cotton shop rags and huck towels can be laundered and reused, and a rag that survives many washes costs less per use than one thrown away after one job. Oily rags are different: wring out the free oil and send them to an industrial laundry, not an on-site washer that drains to the sewer. Under federal rule 40 CFR 261.4(a)(26), solvent-soaked rags sent for laundering must be kept in closed containers labeled “Excluded Solvent-Contaminated Wipes,” contain no free liquids and go out within 180 days.
