Floor Pad Colors Explained: Stripping vs Scrubbing vs Buffing vs Burnishing, Which Machine Speed Each Needs, and How to Cost a Pad
The short answer: floor pad colour tells you how aggressive the pad is and therefore which job it is for — black and brown strip, blue scrubs, red cleans and buffs, white polishes, and the tan, aqua and pale burnishing pads are for high-speed machines only. The one rule that keeps floors out of trouble is machine speed: stripping, scrubbing, cleaning and buffing pads are built for low-speed rotary or automatic machines at roughly 175 to 600 RPM, while burnishing pads are built for ultra-high-speed machines at 1,500 RPM and above. Put a stripping pad on a burnisher and you remove the finish you just paid to lay; put a burnishing pad on a slow swing machine and nothing happens. This guide takes the job descriptions and speed bands from 3M’s own floor pad selection wall chart, dated May 2025, because 3M wrote the colour convention the rest of the industry follows, and then shows how to cost a pad per thousand square feet on your own floor.
The colour convention, from the manufacturer that set it
3M’s chart organises pads by maintenance operation, not by colour, and that is the right way to read it. Each operation has a purpose, a machine and a speed. The colours fall out of that. The practical shorthand — darker is more aggressive, lighter is gentler — holds across the low-speed pads and is the reason a crew can be trained on colour alone, but the shorthand breaks at the burnishing end, where the pale tan, white and aqua pads are for a completely different machine. Treat colour as a label for a job, and the job as the thing you are actually buying.

The three pads most buildings actually need
A typical office, school or clinic with vinyl composition tile runs on three pads and one machine speed. A stripping pad comes out once or twice a year when the finish is taken back to bare tile; it is the most aggressive pad in the closet and the one most likely to be misused. A buffing pad is the weekly or nightly workhorse on the low-speed machine, lifting scuffs and heel marks from the finish without cutting into it. A polishing pad is the gentlest of the three and is what you use when the goal is appearance rather than soil removal. Buildings with a high-speed burnisher add a fourth pad chosen for their finish — a harder finish takes the more aggressive burnishing pads, a softer finish takes the aqua-type pad, which 3M calls “the soft finish problem solver.”
What none of these pads does is disinfect or clean chemically. The pad supplies the abrasion; the solution in the tank or bucket does the rest, and the wrong solution under the right pad is the more common failure. Sizing and fitting
Pads are sold by diameter to match the machine, and the common commercial sizes run from 13 to 20 inches; the machine’s own plate says which. A pad that is an inch small rides loose on the drive block and wears at the centre, and a pad that is an inch large overhangs and catches on baseboards. Most pads are two-sided, and turning the pad over when the first face loads with finish roughly doubles its life. Rinse pads after stripping and hang them to dry; a stripping pad left in a bucket of stripper overnight is a pad you will throw away. Genuine Joe does not print pad life on the case, and neither does any manufacturer we have checked, because life depends entirely on the floor, the soil load and whether the operator turns the pad. How to cost a pad per thousand square feet
Pads are cheap per unit and expensive per year when they are used wrong, so cost them per square foot and per job rather than per case. The method takes one week and a marker.
- Mark each pad with the date it went on the machine and the operation. One word: strip, scrub, buff or burnish.
- Count the square feet covered before the pad is discarded. Use the building’s floor plan; most facilities know the tile area by floor.
- Divide the pad price by the square feet covered, then multiply by 1,000. That is the pad cost per thousand square feet for that operation.
- Repeat by operation. Stripping pads cover far fewer square feet than buffing pads, and that is expected; what you are looking for is a buffing pad that dies as fast as a stripping pad, which means the wrong pad, the wrong solution or a machine that needs its drive block replaced.
Example math — substitute your own invoice: a case of five 20-inch buffing pads at $30 is $6 per pad. If a pad, turned once, buffs 40,000 square feet before it is spent, the cost is 15 cents per thousand square feet. The same pad used on a floor that is being cleaned with the wrong chemistry might load up at 15,000 square feet: 40 cents per thousand, or nearly three times the cost, with no change in the pad. The stripping pad on the same building might cover 5,000 square feet at $7 a pad, or $1.40 per thousand square feet, which is why stripping is an annual event and not a monthly one. What to order for a building
For a facility on a nightly low-speed programme, a sensible opening order is a case of buffing pads, a case of polishing pads and a small quantity of stripping pads sized to the machine, with the pads for the burnisher added only if the building owns one. What is the difference between buffing and burnishing?
Speed and purpose. Buffing is done on a low-speed rotary machine at roughly 175 to 600 RPM to remove scuffs and heel marks; burnishing is done on an ultra-high-speed machine at 1,500 RPM and above to repair the finish and raise gloss. They use different pads, and 3M’s chart lists them as separate operations with separate machines.
Can I use a black stripping pad to scrub?
You can, and you will remove finish while you do it. Black and brown pads are built to take finish and sealer off the floor. For scrubbing before a recoat, use a blue or surface-preparation pad; for daily cleaning, use red.
Does the colour code work across brands?
Broadly, yes. The colour-to-operation convention that 3M publishes is the one other manufacturers follow, and Genuine Joe pads are sold by the same operation names: stripping, buffing, polishing. Check the operation on the case label rather than assuming from the shade, especially at the burnishing end where several pale colours exist.
How many square feet does a floor pad last?
No manufacturer we have checked publishes a figure, because it depends on the floor, the soil, the solution and whether the pad is turned. Date each pad, count the square feet it covers, and divide; that number is worth more than any published estimate.
