Neutral Floor Cleaner vs Degreaser vs Floor Disinfectant: Cost Per Mop Bucket, Not Cost Per Gallon
The short answer: a neutral cleaner is the daily product for any finished or sealed floor, a degreaser is a kitchen and back-of-house product that gets rinsed, and a floor disinfectant is for the rooms where a label or an inspector requires disinfection, at its contact time. They dilute at very different rates, so the gallon price on the invoice tells you almost nothing. Zep’s own pages put its neutral cleaner at 1 to 5 ounces per gallon of water, its no-rinse floor disinfectant at 32 dilutions per gallon, and its citrus degreaser at anywhere from full strength to 8 ounces per gallon. Priced per four-gallon mop bucket, the cheapest jug is often the most expensive floor.
What each product is, from the manufacturer pages
Neutral floor cleaner. Zep Concentrated Neutral pH Floor Cleaner is a pH-neutral concentrate for rubber, natural stone, tile, marble and VCT. Zep’s page gives the dilution guide as 1 oz per gallon for light cleaning, 2 oz for normal and 3–5 oz for heavy, says one gallon makes up to 128 gallons of solution, and notes it is designed to clean without stripping or dulling floor finish. That last line is the reason it is the daily product: the finish on a VCT floor is the expensive part, and a neutral cleaner is the only one of the three built to leave it alone. Genuine Joe Neutral Floor Cleaner is the budget equivalent; Genuine Joe publishes no dilution table we can cite, so read its label.
Degreaser. Zep Heavy-Duty Citrus Degreaser and Cleaner is a d-limonene solvent cleaner. Zep’s directions: full strength for tough soils, 1:1 for medium, 8 fl oz per gallon for light soils, allow one minute, then wipe and rinse thoroughly. The page lists appliances, grills, stovetops, fiberglass, aluminum and stainless steel as surfaces; finished floors are not on the list. A solvent degreaser will lift kitchen grease that a neutral cleaner spreads around, and it will also lift floor finish if it sits on it. Genuine Joe Degreaser and Zep All-Purpose Cleaner/Degreaser are the alkaline alternatives for lighter grease.
Floor disinfectant. Zep No Rinse Floor Disinfectant carries EPA Reg. No. 1839-168-40849. Zep’s page says a gallon makes up to 32 refills, that the product is formulated at pH 5.5–7.5 and will not dull high-gloss floor finish with repeated use, that it is a cleaner, deodorizer and virucide in one step for floors, walls, glazed tile and other hard non-porous surfaces, and that it kills SARS-CoV-2 on hard non-porous surfaces in one minute when used as directed. Other organisms on the label have their own contact times; the label, not the headline, governs.

Two mistakes cost the most. The first is mopping general floors with disinfectant every day “to be safe”: it costs four times the neutral cleaner per bucket, the crew rarely holds the contact time on a floor that dries in two minutes, and the label claims are not earned anyway. The second is using a degreaser on a finished floor because the kitchen jug was closer: the finish clouds, the floor becomes slippery from residue, and the recoat costs more than a year of neutral cleaner. Cost per mop bucket, from the dilution ratios
A standard mop bucket holds four gallons of solution. Use the manufacturer’s normal-use ratio and divide the gallon price by the number of buckets it makes. The prices below are examples for the arithmetic; use your invoice.

The same $30 gallon is a $1 floor, a $4 floor or a $7.50 floor depending on the label. That is the whole argument for matching the product to the room: a 10-bucket-a-night building that mops everything with disinfectant spends roughly $37 a night; the same building on neutral cleaner for seven buckets of corridor and disinfectant for three buckets of restroom spends about $24. Dosing so the number holds
Every ratio above assumes someone measures. A crew that pours “a glug” of neutral cleaner into the bucket is usually at 4 to 8 ounces per gallon, which doubles the cost and leaves a residue that dulls the finish Zep says the product protects. Three fixes, cheapest first: a marked measuring cup zip-tied to the bucket; pump dispensers on the gallon jugs, which deliver a fixed ounce per stroke; or a wall-mounted dilution station for buildings with more than a few crews. For the disinfectant, dosing is not only a cost issue: the EPA registration is for the label ratio, and a weaker mix is not a registered disinfectant. FAQ
Can I mop every floor with a disinfectant to keep it simple?
You can, but it costs about four times the neutral cleaner per bucket at Zep’s ratios, the crew seldom holds the label contact time on a fast-drying floor, and nothing on a corridor floor needs it. Use disinfectant in restrooms, locker rooms, daycare and clinical areas, and neutral cleaner everywhere else.
Will a degreaser damage a finished floor?
A solvent degreaser can cloud or lift floor finish if it sits on it, and Zep does not list finished floors among its citrus degreaser’s surfaces. Keep degreasers to kitchen and back-of-house floors, use the light-soil dilution for routine mopping, and rinse.
How much does a mop bucket of neutral cleaner cost?
At Zep’s normal-cleaning ratio of 2 oz per gallon, a four-gallon bucket takes 8 oz and a gallon of concentrate makes 16 buckets. At an example price of $30 a gallon that is under $2 a bucket; at the 1 oz autoscrubber ratio it is under $1.
Does a floor disinfectant need rinsing?
Zep No Rinse Floor Disinfectant is labelled no-rinse on hard non-porous surfaces, and Zep states it will not dull high-gloss finish at pH 5.5–7.5. Surfaces that touch food are a different case and follow the label’s rinse instruction.
