Dust mop: the tool that does the most square feet per hour
A dust mop is three parts: a frame, a handle, and a head that slips or snaps over the frame. Push broom: bristle decides the job
A push broom is a block head with a threaded or bolted handle, and the bristle is the whole specification. One per closet is the usual ratio; it is a light, cheap tool and the cost is in the labour of using it on open floor, not in the broom. How many of each, and how to price a shift
No manufacturer publishes a life in square feet for a broom head or a dust-mop refill, so the honest method is to measure your own. The count takes one week.
- List the floors by surface and area. Sealed smooth floors go to the dust mop; rough, wet or gritty areas go to the push broom; every restroom and stair gets an angle broom; every public room in use during the day gets a lobby set.
- Date each consumable when it goes into service — dust-mop heads and push-broom heads — and note the area it serves.
- Record the date it is retired and divide the price by the shifts it served. That is the cost per shift for that tool on that floor.
- Add the labour. Time one full dry-sweep of the building with the tools you have; if the number is high, the fix is usually a wider dust mop frame or a second lobby set, not a cheaper broom.
